Australia star Nathan Lyon taunts England fans after jeers in fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford
After being on the receiving end of ‘good banter’ from the Old Trafford crowd, Nathan Lyon ensured he had the last laugh as Australia retained the Ashes in England for the first time in 18 years.
England’s middle and lower order frustrated Australia on the fifth day of the fourth Test as Jos Buttler, Craig Overton and Jack Leach battled hard to salvage a draw before Josh Hazlewood made the breakthrough for the tourists with 13.3 overs to spare.
Australia’s celebrations were momentarily put on hold as Overton reviewed umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s decision but it could not save the England fast bowler who was given out lbw.
Joe Root’s side can still level the series by winning the final Test match at The Oval but Australia’s 2-1 lead means the urn will be taken Down Under following their 4-0 win at home in 2017-18.
Lyon was on the receiving end of a barrage of playful abuse from England fans after his fumble allowed Ben Stokes to take the hosts to victory in the previous Test at Headingley.
The off-spinner was also struggling with a wounded finger which had to be superglued in order for him to continue bowling in Manchester.
Despite this, Lyon still managed to take two wickets and hit back at England supporters after Australia’s win.
