Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes help England avoid huge upset after bowling Ireland out for JUST 38 at Lord’s

Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad combined to produce a devastating spell of fast bowling to help England avoid major embarrassment and record a 143-run win over Ireland at Lord’s.

England started day three hoping to build on their 181-run lead, but an upset looked a distinct possibility when Oli Stone was clean bowled by Stuart Thompson – the first ball of a dramatic final day.

Ireland faced just a solitary over in response before a rain enforced delay. When play resumed, England were presented with ideal conditions in which to bowl and their experienced new ball duo exploited them in exemplary fashion.

Broad triggered the Irish collapse, removing the dangerous William Porterfield courtesy of a brilliant Jonny Bairstow catch behind the wicket and eventually finished with figures of four for 19 from just four overs.

Woakes, not guaranteed a spot in next week’s first Ashes Test despite his continued excellence, cemented his reputation as a Lord’s specialist, backing up Broad from the Nursery end to take six for 17.

Only one Irish batsman, James McCollum (11), reached double figures on a day which saw 11 wickets fall in just 95 balls, with the visitors recording the lowest ever Test score at Lord’s and the lowest overall since 1932.

Having, themselves, been bowled out for just 85 in their first innings, nightwatchman Jack Leach’s unlikely 92 ultimately proved decisive in helping England post a competitive score second time around.
